Discard it instead of rewetting it
FDA’s1 eye-cosmetic safety guidance, displaying a December 18, 2006 update, advises discarding dried-up mascara. It says not to add water or saliva to moisten it.1
Why does the added liquid matter?
The guidance explains that bacteria from the mouth may grow in mascara and cause infection. Added water can introduce bacteria and dilute the preservative intended to protect against microbial growth.1
Making the mascara spread again does not establish that it is suitable to use near your eyes.1
If irritation has already occurred
FDA1 advises immediately stopping any irritating eye cosmetic. If irritation persists, see a doctor; contact your healthcare provider first for a bad reaction.1
