NICE1 advises choosing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) medicines around the predominant symptoms. Write down your main problem: pain, loose stools or urgency.1
Who took part?
A phase 2 trial randomized 203 adults aged 18–65 without constipation-predominant IBS to 20 mg ebastine daily or placebo for 12 weeks; 202 were analyzed.2
Bring your diagnosis and bowel-pattern notes. Ask whether the eligibility rules match your diagnosis.
What counted?
Response required considerable or total symptom relief plus at least 30% lower weekly average pain than baseline, together for at least six of twelve weeks.2
Ask how your prescriber would measure benefit. Record the symptom and review date, so a discussion about pain does not become a judgment based only on bowel frequency.
What changed?
Estimated combined response was 12.0% versus 4.3%: difference 7.7 percentage points (95% confidence interval 0.2–15.2). Separate outcomes and the combined analysis among protocol followers were not statistically significant. Missing diaries required statistical estimation.2
A 2026 dose-comparison abstract describes an open-label study, not another blinded replication.3
Take the study citation to a gastroenterologist and ask what uncertainty would remain if you tried the medicine under supervision.
Before treatment
Spanish product information lists nasal allergies, chronic hives and allergic skin inflammation; it does not list IBS. Precautions include heart-rhythm risk, low potassium and interactions with ketoconazole or erythromycin. Severe liver disease limits dosing. It advises avoiding ebastine during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a precaution. Sleepiness or dizziness can occur.4
Check local availability and licensed uses with your clinician. Bring allergy tablets, sleep products and all other medicines to the review. Do not combine antihistamines or increase a dose on your own.
NICE1 recommends agreeing follow-up according to symptom response; new warning signs require investigation or referral.1
If loose stools are the main concern, our bile-acid diarrhea trial checks address a different diagnosis to discuss with your clinician.
Bloated by Dinner includes “The Gut-Side Options,” which explains why medicine discussions depend on IBS subtype. Bring your bowel-pattern log to that conversation.
