Before an arranged iontophoresis appointment, check the clinic’s jewellery instructions. Contact the team in advance if a ring or piercing cannot readily be removed, so they can explain what applies to your treatment.1

Ask about your treatment area

University Hospitals Dorset’s leaflet says jewellery, including body piercings in the area of current flow, must be removed before treatment. Ask your own clinic which pieces its instructions cover.1

Try: “I have this jewellery or piercing. Does it affect the planned session, and what should I arrange beforehand?”

Tell the team about a removal difficulty

Try: “This piece cannot readily be removed. Can the nurse advise me before I attend?”

Describe the location and the difficulty. Have the clinic confirm its instructions rather than trying to force a piece out or assuming it can stay in place.

The Dorset service invites patients to ask for advice during their treatment course. Keep your own team’s answer with your appointment details.1
