Do Bladder Leaks Run in Families? What Studies Show

If your mother or sister leaks, your own risk is somewhat higher. In a Norwegian study of more than 6,000 mothers and 7,600 daughters, daughters of women with leaks had about 1.3 times the risk, and sisters about 1.6 times. Twin studies suggest genes matter most for urge leaks, while for stress leaks and prolapse surgery, lifestyle and life events matter at least as much. Here is what that means for prevention.

Do Hair Supplements Like Nutrafol and Viviscal Work? What Trials Show

Branded hair supplements point to clinical trials, and those trials did report more hairs and less shedding. But they were small, from 40 to 70 women, and a 2026 review of 14 studies found no clear difference in total hair count, calling for more independent research. Here is what the trials measured, what they didn't, and what to check before you spend.

Do Migraines Get Worse in Perimenopause? What Studies Show

Migraine often changes around menopause, but not in one direction. In a US survey of 3,664 women with migraine, 12% of perimenopausal women had headaches on 10 or more days a month, against 8% before the transition. After a natural menopause, an Italian study found migraine improved in almost two-thirds. Yet in a Norwegian study, nearly half of women still had migraine after menopause. Here is what to expect and when to get help.

Do Periods Sync When Women Live Together? What Studies Show

Many women are sure their periods sync with roommates, sisters or friends. In a study of 186 Chinese women in dorms for over a year, they didn't, and a reanalysis found the famous first study's syncing was at chance level. A smaller Indian study of roommates claimed a modest shift. German researchers also report that some long cycles briefly line up with the moon. Here is what the evidence shows and why syncing feels so convincing.

Do Stimulant Laxatives Make Your Bowel Lazy? What Studies Show

Many women put up with constipation because they've heard laxatives make the bowel lazy or addictive. An expert review found tolerance uncommon, no sign of rebound constipation, and no potential for addiction, and a four-week trial of bisacodyl in 368 people worked well. One large cohort did find a cancer signal for frequent users. Here is what the studies show and how to use the shelf sensibly.

Does Acupressure Help Period Cramps? What Trials Show

Acupressure is free, drug-free and something you can do yourself. A 2025 review of 23 trials found it eased period pain more than fake acupressure, and side effects were mild. A wider review of non-drug options agreed it helped, though exercise, acupuncture and heat ranked higher. The catch: most of the trials were small and low quality. Here is what the evidence shows and how to fit it into a cramp plan.

Does Inulin (Chicory Root Fiber) Cause Gas? What Studies Show

Inulin is the added fiber in many high-fiber bars, cereals and gut-health drinks. In tolerance trials, healthy adults handled up to about 10 grams a day of standard inulin with mild gas and bloating, while 10 grams of a shorter-chain form caused much more. In people with IBS, a review of 11 trials found inulin-type fibers made flatulence worse. Here is how to tell if it's behind your bloating.

Does Listening to Music Help You Sleep? What Trials Show

Music at bedtime is cheap, easy and free of side effects, and the trials are fairly encouraging. A Cochrane review of 13 studies with 1,007 adults with insomnia found that listening to music for 25 to 60 minutes a day improved how well people rated their sleep, with moderate-certainty evidence. In older adults, calm, slow music for at least 4 weeks worked best. But on sleep trackers, the gains didn't show up. Here is what that means.

Does Niacinamide Work? What the Skin Trials Show

Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, is in serums for everything from wrinkles to spots to acne. In a 12-week split-face trial of 50 women aged 40 to 60, a 5% niacinamide moisturizer improved fine lines, dark spots and red blotchiness more than plain moisturizer. In an acne trial, a 4% gel did about as well as an antibiotic gel. But the key aging and pigment trials came from Procter & Gamble researchers, and a Cochrane review rated the acne evidence low quality.

Does Stress Cause Bad Breath? What Studies Show

Stress may change your breath. In a Brazilian study of 71 dental students, the sulfur gases behind bad breath rose on exam day and saliva flow fell. A lab stress test raised the same gases in men and women. And in an Iranian survey of 4,763 adults, people who felt anxious or stressed were more likely to think their breath smelled. Here is what the studies measured and what helps.

Does Sugar-Free Gum Prevent Cavities? What Studies Show

Chewing sugar-free gum after meals is common advice. A review of 12 trials found people who chewed it got about 28% fewer new cavities than non-chewers, and xylitol gum did a little better. Related reviews found less plaque and fewer cavity-linked bacteria. The trials varied a lot and were of moderate quality, so the authors called the evidence tentative. Here is how to use gum sensibly.
