L-theanine, a compound from tea, is sold in sleep gummies and capsules. A 2025 meta-analysis of 18 trials found small improvements in how quickly people felt they fell asleep and in overall sleep quality, but many products mixed it with other ingredients. Here is what the evidence supports and what it doesn't.

Quetiapine, an antipsychotic, is sometimes prescribed in small doses as a sleep aid. A systematic review found only one tiny trial for insomnia, which didn't show a significant benefit, and concluded these drugs should be avoided as a first choice. The label warns about weight gain, blood sugar and cholesterol changes, dizziness and falls.

Magnesium is the most common home remedy for leg cramps at night. A 2020 Cochrane review of trials in older adults found it made almost no difference to how often cramps came, and caused more stomach upset. Stretching has mixed results: one trial of 80 adults over 55 found nightly stretching cut cramps, another of 191 people found it didn't. Here is what to try and when to get checked.

In a Harvard sleep-lab study, people who read on an iPad for four hours before bed took about 10 minutes longer to fall asleep, made half as much melatonin and felt groggier the next morning than when they read a printed book. A later trial found the iPhone's Night Shift setting didn't improve sleep. Here is what these studies can and can't tell you about your own bedtime screen.

A British study that followed nearly 8,000 adults for 25 years found that sleeping six hours or less at age 50 or 60 was linked to a higher chance of dementia later, and persistent short sleep across midlife carried about 30% higher risk. It shows a link, not proof that short sleep causes dementia, but it's one more reason to take midlife insomnia seriously.

A 2023 US survey found 1 in 5 adults sometimes sleep in another room to cope with a bed partner, and 15% do it every night. A sleep-lab study found couples who shared a bed got more dream sleep. When the snorer's sleep apnea was treated, partners gained about an hour of sleep a night. Here is what the research shows, and why moving rooms shouldn't replace a check for snoring.

In a study of 552 adults aged 63 to 84 who wore light-measuring wrist monitors, those exposed to light during the darkest part of the night were more likely to have obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. It can't show the light caused those conditions, but it's a reason to rethink the TV, hall light or bright night-light, while keeping a safe path to the bathroom.
